We're getting closer to delivering BeatBuddy Pro to our community!

One of the biggest unknowns in any hardware project is the moment when you finally get to program the hardware. Up to that point, it's all schematics, boards, and components – but only when the first lines of code run do you find out if theory meets reality.

It becomes even more interesting when you consider that there's minimal RAM (in kilobytes), high expectations (for a Bluetooth connection), and the hardware has changed compared to the previous version. Suddenly, every line of code matters.

This is the very first OLED display test for BeatBuddy. A small step in code, but a huge one for the entire device – this is when the electronics come to life. 🚀

This milestone represents a significant breakthrough in our hardware development, proving that our design and engineering approach is working.

Prototype v2 is almost ready! Now it's time to code, test, and fine-tune every detail.

This version represents significant improvements over our initial prototype, incorporating feedback from testing and addressing technical challenges we encountered along the way.

Building something real takes time. For the past eight months, we've been pouring our energy into BeatBuddy Pro — a tool we truly believe can help swimmers train more effectively.

What we've learned:

And while we haven't seen the results we hoped for yet, we're not stopping.

Because we know real progress doesn't always come with instant rewards.

It comes from consistency, learning, and showing up — even when it's hard.

We're still here. Still building. Still swimming forward. 🏊‍♂️

This journey has taught us resilience and the importance of persistence in hardware development. Every setback has been a learning opportunity.

It's been over a year since we started building a device to help athletes and swimmers maintain their training pace.

Nevertheless, we are coming back to you with renewed energy.

The last few weeks have been demanding because we had to prepare a refreshed strategy - and because - we believe that our device will be able to help many amateur and professional swimmers, coaches and others.

Our refreshed approach:

Half a year ago, we assumed that in 2024, we would have produced 100 pieces, which were intended for people on our waiting list.

We didn't deliver, as it happens in life (especially in startups). And it's not about lack of funds or overly complicated technical problems. Other factors influenced this state of affairs.

But we're back, and we're committed.

We took BeatBuddy Pro to the pool for its first real user tests with swimmers from the Total Immersion community.

What we learned:

• Haptic feedback (vibration) is highly valued - especially for swimmers with hearing impairments
• The rhythm really motivates swimmers during training
• Nail tips can interfere with button pressing (unexpected discovery!)
• Real-world testing reveals things simulations never could

Swimmer feedback:

"Oh wow... it's really motivating when you hear that rhythm."

Next steps: Preparing a batch of 100 units for intensive beta testing, followed by extensive feedback collection from swimmers and coaches worldwide.

After months of design work and component sourcing, we built our first working prototype.

What the first prototype included:

• Basic PCB design with microcontroller
• Initial OLED display integration
• Vibration motor for haptic feedback
• Bluetooth module for connectivity
• Rechargeable battery system

Key learnings from v1:

• Hardware constraints are real - every kilobyte of RAM matters
• Waterproofing requires careful enclosure design
• Component selection impacts everything
• Testing in actual pool conditions is essential

This prototype proved our concept was viable. But it also showed us how much work remained.

As swimmers and Total Immersion coaches ourselves, we knew the frustrations with existing tempo trainers all too well.

The problems we faced:

• No firmware updates - bugs stay forever
• Single beep feedback - hard to hear underwater
• No programmable intervals - impossible to set complex workouts
• Battery replacement hassles

Our vision: We sketched out what a modern tempo trainer should be:

• OLED display for clear feedback
• Triple feedback: audio + haptic + visual
• Bluetooth connectivity for updates and programming
• Rechargeable battery
• Custom interval programs via mobile app

This was the moment BeatBuddy Pro was conceived - a tool built by swimmers, for swimmers.
