First Real Tests: What Swimmers Say About BeatBuddy Pro
We took BeatBuddy Pro to the pool for its first real user tests. Here's what swimmers discovered — from haptic feedback to nail tip challenges.
The first real tests of our programmable metronome for swimmers and athletes — BeatBuddy Pro — are behind us. And I'll say it briefly: it went really well.
Unexpected Discoveries
During the testing session, swimmers provided valuable feedback that we hadn't anticipated:
Haptic Feedback — Already Built In!
One person suggested that instead of an audio signal, there should be a mechanical signal (gentle vibrations). The pleasant surprise? We already have that (haptic feedback). Someone else noticed that for people with hearing impairments, a tactile metronome could be a very interesting solution.
The Nail Tips Challenge
Here's something we didn't foresee: nail tips don't necessarily help with pressing buttons. This is the kind of real-world feedback you can only get from actual users in actual conditions.

The Power of Rhythm
Another swimmer pointed out that the rhythm provided by the metronome really motivates. There's something powerful about having an external pace-keeper that pushes you forward.
"Oh wow... it's really motivating when you hear that rhythm." — Test participant
Total Immersion Connection
Interestingly, in Total Immersion freestyle swimming, we already have several exercises where the metronome works perfectly:
- Tempo training for stroke consistency
- Rhythm-based breathing patterns
- Speed pyramids with controlled tempo changes
What's Next
In two weeks, we'll conduct more tests with another group. This is just the beginning of our journey with this device.
In preparation: a batch of 100 units, followed by intensive feedback collection.
It's worth leaving the workshop precisely for moments like these — when a user takes your "baby" in their hands and says: "Oh wow... it's really motivating when you hear that rhythm."
Key Takeaways for Product Development
- Real user testing reveals what simulations can't — nail tips affecting button usability wasn't on our radar
- Features you already have might solve problems users raise — our haptic feedback was a pleasant surprise
- Emotional response matters — the motivation factor wasn't something we explicitly designed for, but it's there
