Open Water Swimming: Lessons from Total Immersion Camps

From breathing techniques to group navigation — what I learned at Open Water Total Immersion camps in Kaszuby about rhythm in swimming.

Multi-day swimming camps provide incredible energy. You meet new, interesting, and ambitious people who share a passion for swimming and sports. Time passes quickly in great company.

Kaszuby Open Water Camp

The Open Water Total Immersion camp in Kaszuby, organized by Total Immersion Polska (Paweł Lewicki) and Pływaj Dobrze - Total Immersion Rybnik (Aleksander Ryszka), was a transformative experience.

Day 1: Getting Comfortable in Open Water

The first day focused on transitioning from pool swimming to open water. The experience is completely different:

  • No lane lines for guidance
  • No wall to push off from
  • Natural elements — wind, waves, current
  • Different visibility conditions

I participated as an assistant coach, working toward becoming an official Open Water coach with the Total Immersion method.

Day 2: Breathing, Navigation, and Synchronized Swimming

The second day brought more advanced training:

  • Breathing techniques specific to open water
  • Navigation skills — sighting while maintaining rhythm
  • Group synchronized swimming — the ultimate test of rhythm awareness

What Multi-Day Camps Teach You

The Power of Community

Over 20 people. Dozens of kilometers swum together during training and the Sunday challenge. It was wonderful to be part of this event and help others improve their Total Immersion technique.

Continuous Learning

Each camp reminds me how much more work I need to put into improving my swimming technique. The most interesting exercises for me are:

  • Metronome drills — maintaining consistent tempo
  • Speed pyramids — controlled tempo changes

The Connection to BeatBuddy Pro

These experiences directly influenced BeatBuddy Pro's development. Understanding how swimmers use rhythm in different environments — pool vs. open water — helped us design features that work in both contexts.

Key Insight: In open water, maintaining rhythm becomes even more critical because you lose the visual feedback of lane lines and pool walls. A reliable tempo signal can be the difference between efficient swimming and exhausting struggle.

Upcoming Events

We're thinking about organizing a two-day camp in Kraków. If you're interested, reach out — we're looking for around 15 participants.

The next big camp: Ski and Swim 2026 — combining cross-country skiing with swimming training.
