2.5 Years to This Moment: First Waterproof Device Test

After 2.5 years of development, we tested two fully waterproof BeatBuddy Pro devices in real conditions. Next: 100 beta units.

2.5 years.

That's exactly how long it took me and Maciej Dulski to reach this point.

A point where I can finally test our swimming metronome BeatBuddy Pro in real conditions — calmly, without stress, without improvising.

The Milestone

Today, for the first time, I tested two fully waterproof devices. The tests were successful. More are still ahead of us, but this feels like an important milestone.

What does "waterproof" really mean for a swimming device? It means:

  • Full submersion during entire swim sessions
  • Pressure resistance from diving and turns
  • Chlorine and salt water exposure without degradation
  • Reliable button operation even when wet

We didn't just want "water resistant" — we needed true waterproofing that swimmers could trust lap after lap, session after session.

What's Next: 100 Beta Units

Now it's time to prepare the first batch of 100 devices, which we'll share with trusted swimmers and coaches to collect real, everyday feedback.

This beta program will help us understand:

  • How the device performs across different swimming styles
  • Battery life in real-world usage
  • User experience improvements needed before mass production
  • Edge cases we haven't considered yet

The Reality of Hardware Startups

A hardware startup is not a sprint. It comes with pain, effort, and long iterations. But there's also a lot of fun in it.

Unlike software where you can push updates instantly, hardware requires:

  • Physical prototyping and testing
  • Manufacturing tooling setup
  • Component sourcing and quality control
  • Certification processes

Each iteration takes weeks or months, not days.

Why We Keep Going

And it's exactly this fun, the vision, and the recurring questions we keep getting — "When will it be ready?" "When can I get my own device?" — that keep us moving forward.

This hands-on experience led us to open an experimental hardware product-building practice at MusicTech Lab, focused on PoCs and early validation before moving into the next phases.
